Dwarf Galaxies in the Leo I Group: the Group Luminosity Function beyond the Local Group
نویسندگان
چکیده
We present first results of a survey of the Leo I group at 10 Mpc for MR ≤ −10 dwarf galaxies. This is part of a larger program to measure the faint end of the galaxy luminosity function in nearby poor groups. Our method is optimized to find Local-Group-like dwarfs down to dwarf spheroidal surface brighnesses, but we also find very large LSB dwarfs in Leo I with no Local Group counterpart. A preliminary measurement of the luminosity function yields a slope consistent with that measured in the Local Group.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

The low surface brightness dwarf members of nearby groups of galaxies Abstract We present the photometric and spectroscopic results of a survey done in a wide-field area of nearby groups and poor clusters. The main goals are identifying and characterizing the properties of low-surface-brightness dwarf galaxies and determining the galaxy luminosity function for M V > −13. We surveyed areas (typi...
متن کاملThe Luminosity Distribution of Local Group Galaxies
From a rediscussion of Local Group membership, and of distances to individual galaxies, we obtain MV values for 35 probable and possible Local Group members. The luminosity function of these objects is well fitted by a Schechter function with faint end slope α = −1.1 ± 0.1. The probability that the luminosity distribution of the Local Group is a single Schechter function with α steeper than −1....
متن کاملProperties of Two New M31 dSph Companions from Keck Imaging
We have obtained Keck Low Resolution Imaging Spectrograph images in V and I of the newly discovered Local Group dwarf galaxies PegasusdSph and Cassiopeia dSph and their surrounding field. The first stellar luminosity functions and color-magnitude diagrams are presented for stars with V ∼< 25 and I ∼< 24. The distances to the new dwarfs are estimated from the apparent I mag of the tip of the red...
متن کاملThe Colors of Dwarf Elliptical Galaxy Globular Cluster Systems , Nuclei and Stellar Halos
We present the results of a Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 F555W and F814W survey of 69 dwarf elliptical galaxies (dEs) in the Virgo and Fornax Clusters and Leo Group. The V − I colors of the dE globular clusters, nuclei, and underlying field star populations are used to trace the dE star-formation histories. We find that the dE globular cluster candidates are as blue as the metal-poor globular c...
